How an SSL certificate works

An SSL (TLS) certificate encrypts the connection between the visitor and the server: passwords, card details and forms cannot be read in transit, and the browser shows the padlock and the https:// prefix. Without it, Chrome and Safari flag the site as “Not secure” and Google ranks it lower.

Certificates differ in what the issuer verifies before signing. RapidSSL checks only that you control the domain (DV) and is issued in minutes. True BusinessID also verifies the company (OV): the company name appears in the certificate and DigiCert backs it with a financial warranty. Wildcard covers every subdomain with one certificate. All are issued for 1 year and renew from the client area.

Answers to common questions about SSL certificates, website security, and HTTPS activation.

For a site on IPHOST hosting, Let’s Encrypt is enough and already active. You buy a certificate when you need what the free one does not give: every subdomain with one certificate (Wildcard), the verified company name in the certificate with a financial warranty (True BusinessID), or a certificate for a server that is not at IPHOST or has no cPanel.

RapidSSL checks only that you control the domain (DV) and covers the domain plus the www variant; it is issued in minutes. RapidSSL Wildcard is DV too but covers the domain and every first-level subdomain (*.domain.md). True BusinessID also validates the company (OV): the issuer checks the company records, its name appears in the certificate and DigiCert backs it with a financial warranty. All use the same encryption; validation and coverage differ.

Since 2026, the common rule of all issuers (CA/Browser Forum) caps certificate validity: 199 days now, 100 days from March 2027 and 47 days from March 2029. That is why you buy a 1-year subscription, not a certificate: the issuer reissues the certificate for free as often as needed during the subscription, and our system does it automatically before expiry. On your IPHOST hosting, VPS or server we also reinstall it automatically; if the certificate sits on a server outside IPHOST, you receive the new certificate by e-mail and install it yourself (twice a year now, four times from 2027). For external servers we recommend ACME automation or our managed service.

RapidSSL and Wildcard: after payment you get the domain validation by e-mail (a message to admin@domain, a file or a DNS record); once confirmed, the certificate is issued in 10–60 minutes. True BusinessID: besides the domain, DigiCert checks the company in the state register and may call the company number; usually 1–3 business days when the order details match the register.

Yes. The certificate is issued for the domain, not the server, and can be installed anywhere (cPanel, Plesk, nginx, IIS, a load balancer, a CDN). Keep in mind that on a server outside IPHOST reinstallation is manual: at every reissue (every 199 days now, 100 from 2027) you receive the new certificate by e-mail and replace it yourself; the private key stays the same. For a plain (DV) certificate on an external server we recommend Let’s Encrypt with automatic renewal; a paid certificate makes sense there for Wildcard or company validation, or if you give us access and we install it.

On IPHOST hosting, VPS or dedicated servers we install it for free on the day of issuance; open a ticket with the domain name. On other servers you install it from the panel (cPanel: SSL/TLS → Install) or we send the steps for your server. If needed, installation on an external server is done as a managed service, on request.

Certificates are issued for 1 year. 30 days before expiry you get the renewal invoice; after payment the certificate is reissued and, on IPHOST servers, we reinstall it. If you no longer want it, cancel it from the client area before the renewal, with no penalties. An issued certificate is not refundable, because the issuer charges at issuance.
