Backup a server is vital for keeping your data safe. Common steps and techniques for backing up a server:
Identify Data to Backup:
Determine What System Files and Data You Want to Back Up : This will be the data you want backed up. E.g. backup system files, databases,backing app data like your photos etc.
Choose a Backup Method:
- Full Backup: A Full backup for your server, includes all data and configurations. It consumes the time and memory of storage.
- Incremental Backup: Saves what has been changed ever since the last backup. Though it is useful for both less time and space, a full backup must be the base.
- Differential Backup: This method back up all data that has changed since the last full backup, regardless of when it was backed up.
Select Backup Destination:
- On-Net Storage: back up to local storage devices such as external hard drive, NAS (Network Attached Storage), or another server.
- Off-Site Storage: Backup to a remote location whether that be via cloud services (AWS S3, Google Cloud, Azure) or physical off-site storage.
Schedule Regular Backups:
Backup systems at regular intervals (daily, weekly) through automation to protect data on a consistent basis.
Use Backup Software:
- Use the backup software (Veeam, Acronis, Bacula etc) that works for your server’s Operating System and requirements.
- Other software even incorporates functionalities such as encryption, compression and cloud integration.
Test Your Backups:
Perform restore testing in order to verify the proper operation of backups and ability recover data in an event of restoration.
Implement Redundancy:
Use RAID or snapshots and mirroring to add another (not alternate) level of data fault tolerance.
Document the Backup Process:
Keep Things Straightforward and Recoverable: Document your backup plan, schedule, configuration so that everything is consistent and data recovery can be performed safely when needed in a timely manner.
Secure the Backups:
Secure backup files, especially when stored off-site or in the cloud/environment-control access to backed-up data.
