What is a .eu domain?

.eu is the top-level domain of the European Union. It is managed by EURid, a non-profit organisation appointed by the European Commission, and it also exists in Cyrillic (.ею) and Greek (.ευ) script. A .eu address is not tied to a single country: it tells visitors that your business or project works across Europe. IPHOST registers .eu names directly with EURid and lets you manage them from the same client area as your other domains and services.

Which countries does .eu cover?

.eu covers the 27 member states of the European Union. Citizens, residents and organisations of the three other countries of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) can register .eu names as well. Switzerland and the United Kingdom are not included.

Who can register a .eu domain?

• Citizens of an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, wherever they live;
• Residents of an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, whatever their citizenship;
• Companies established in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway;
• Organisations established there, such as associations and foundations.

The registrant's details must be their own: a .eu domain cannot be held by a representative or proxy on behalf of someone who does not meet the criteria. The criteria apply for as long as the domain is registered, not only on the day of the order.

What happens if the registrant is not eligible?

We check eligibility before we register a .eu domain; if the registrant does not meet the criteria, the domain is not registered and the amount goes back to your IPHOST account balance. After registration, EURid also checks registration data automatically and can ask the registrant to confirm their details at any time, even after the domain is active. While the details are being verified, the domain can be suspended: the website and e-mail on it stop working. If the registrant does not meet the criteria, EURid revokes the domain and it becomes available to anyone else. Once the domain has been registered, the fee is not refunded, so please give accurate details that meet the criteria above.

.eu domains after Brexit

Since 1 January 2021, residents of the United Kingdom who are not EU citizens can no longer hold .eu domains. EURid suspended the .eu names of UK registrants who did not prove their eligibility, withdrew them in July 2021 and revoked them in January 2022. EU citizens living in the UK remain eligible, and a UK business can hold a .eu name through a company established in the EU.

How to buy and register a .eu domain

1. Check that the name is free with the search form on this page.
2. Add it to the cart and fill in the registrant's details: the name, address and country of a person or company that meets the criteria above.
3. Pay online. Before registering, our team checks that the registrant meets EURid's criteria. If they do, we register the domain with EURid and send you a confirmation e-mail when it is active; if they do not, we do not register it and the amount goes back to your IPHOST account balance, for another domain or service.
4. Keep your e-mail address up to date: EURid sends its verification requests there.

.eu domain registration requirements

• Eligibility: citizenship, residence or establishment in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
• Name: 2 to 63 characters, letters, digits and hyphens; it cannot start or end with a hyphen or have hyphens in both the third and fourth positions. Names with accented and non-Latin characters (IDN) are accepted too.
• Contact details: full name or company name, postal address, a working e-mail address and a phone number.
• Period: 1 to 3 years at a time.

Is a .eu domain good for SEO?

Google treats .eu as a regional domain, in the same way as a generic domain such as .com, so a .eu site is not tied to one country in search results. That makes it a good fit for a site that targets several European countries, especially with separate language versions. For a site aimed at a single country, a national domain such as .de or .ro is the stronger local signal.

Terms and conditions

• Domains are registered for a minimum period of 1 year and cannot be cancelled after registration.
• .eu domains can be registered and renewed for periods of 1 to 3 years.
• The registrant must meet EURid's eligibility criteria (citizenship, residence or establishment in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway) for the whole registration period. IPHOST checks eligibility before registration; if the registrant is not eligible, the domain is not registered and the amount is credited to the customer's IPHOST account balance. A registered domain whose registrant is not eligible, or whose details cannot be verified, can be suspended or revoked by EURid, and the fees paid for it are not refunded.
• Spelling mistakes in a domain name cannot be corrected. Once a domain name has been registered or renewed, the fees paid for it are not refunded.
• The customer is responsible for all data related to the registered domain name, including keeping the contact details current, complete and correct for the whole registration period. Only the data provided by the customer is considered valid; the provider is not required to act on anything other than the data given by the customer, nor to check its accuracy.
