What is a .at domain?

.at is the country code domain of Austria. It is managed by nic.at, the Austrian registry. A .at address tells visitors and search engines that your website is meant for Austria and for German-speaking customers there, which is why most Austrian companies, shops and public bodies use it.

What is a .at domain used for?

Mainly for websites aimed at Austria: company sites, online shops, practices and local services. Because "at" is also an English word, some brands use .at for short, memorable addresses, but its main value is the local Austrian identity.

Who can register a .at domain?

Anyone. nic.at allows any individual or company to register a .at domain, whatever their nationality, place of residence or area of business. Private individuals must be of full legal age, because the registration is a contract with nic.at.

New rules from 1 October 2026

With the Austrian NIS law (NISG 2026, which implements the EU NIS2 directive), .at domain holders must give a telephone number in addition to their e-mail address and must cooperate when nic.at or the registrar asks them to confirm that their details are correct and complete. Keep your contact details up to date in your client area and answer verification requests promptly.

.at domain registration requirements

• Name: 1 to 63 characters, letters, digits and hyphens; it cannot start or end with a hyphen or have hyphens in both the third and fourth positions, and one- or two-character names cannot contain a hyphen.
• Umlauts: names with umlauts and other special characters from the nic.at list, such as ä, ö, ü and ß, are accepted.
• Contact details: the registrant's name or company name, postal address, e-mail address and phone number, kept correct and up to date.
• Period: 1 year, renewed every year.

Transferring a .at domain to IPHOST

What happens when a .at domain is deleted?

Renew it before the expiry date from your client area; we send renewal reminders by e-mail. When a .at domain is deleted, nic.at keeps it locked as "pending delete" for about eight weeks; after that, anyone can register it.

Is a .at domain good for SEO in Austria?

Yes. Austrian visitors recognise .at as a local address, and a country code domain is one of the clearest signals Google uses to show a site to users in that country. A German-language site for both Germany and Austria is often better served by .de and .at together, or by the regional .eu with language versions.

• From 1 October 2026, .at domain holders must provide a telephone number and cooperate with nic.at and the registrar when asked to verify their details.
• After a .at domain is deleted, nic.at keeps it locked for about eight weeks before it can be registered again.
• Spelling mistakes in a domain name cannot be corrected. Once a domain name has been registered or renewed, the fees paid for it are not refunded.
• The customer is responsible for all data related to the registered domain name, including keeping the contact details current, complete and correct for the whole registration period. Only the data provided by the customer is considered valid; the provider is not required to act on anything other than the data given by the customer, nor to check its accuracy.
