What is a .in domain?

.in is the country code domain of India. It is managed by NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, and it is the local address Indian users recognise for companies, online shops, start-ups and services in India. A .in address tells visitors and search engines that your website is meant for the Indian market.

Who can register a .in domain?

Indian residents and companies, and also individuals and companies from other countries. Registrants outside India must show a genuine connection with India, for example customers, partners or an office there, and must pass the registrant verification described below. If you have no business in India, choose another extension, such as .com or your own country's domain.

Mandatory registrant verification

NIXI verifies the holder of every new .in domain. After registration we forward NIXI's request to you, and the verification must be completed within 7 days:

• Registrants in India: identity verified through DigiLocker, for example with Aadhaar, PAN or a passport.
• Registrants outside India: a copy of a valid passport (or company documents) and a signed statement explaining your connection with India and what the domain will be used for.

Until the verification is approved, the domain stays on hold and does not work. If it is not completed, NIXI can suspend or cancel the domain. Privacy protection, temporary or anonymous e-mail addresses are not accepted for .in, so use your real contact details.

How to buy and register a .in domain

1. Check that the name is free with the search form on this page.
2. Add it to the cart and fill in the registrant's real details (a person or a company), with a working e-mail address and phone number.
3. Pay online; the domain is registered and you receive a confirmation e-mail.
4. Send the verification documents when we forward NIXI's request, within 7 days.
5. After approval, manage DNS, contacts and renewal from your client area.

.in domain registration requirements

• Name: 2 to 63 characters, letters a–z, digits and hyphens; it cannot start or end with a hyphen.
• Contact details: the registrant's real name or company name, postal address, e-mail address and phone number, without privacy protection.
• Verification: completed within 7 days of registration, as described above.
• Period: 1 to 3 years, as shown in the cart.

Transferring a .in domain to IPHOST

If your .in domain is registered elsewhere, ask your current registrar for the transfer code and place a transfer order on our domain transfer page. NIXI may ask for the registrant verification after a transfer as well.

What happens when a .in domain expires?

Renew it before the expiry date from your client area; we send renewal reminders by e-mail. If it is not renewed, the website and e-mail on it stop working, and recovering it later can cost more than a renewal. After that period, anyone can register the name.

Is a .in domain good for SEO in India?

Yes. A country code domain is one of the clearest signals Google uses to show a site to users in that country, and Indian visitors recognise .in as local. For an international audience, .com with language or country versions is usually the better base.

• Every new .in domain must pass NIXI's registrant verification within 7 days. Until it is approved, the domain stays on hold; if it is not completed, NIXI can suspend or cancel the domain, and the registration fee is not refunded.
• Registrants outside India must show a genuine connection with India and provide a valid passport or company documents with a signed statement of use.
• Privacy protection and temporary or anonymous e-mail addresses cannot be used for .in domains.
• Spelling mistakes in a domain name cannot be corrected. Once a domain name has been registered or renewed, the fees paid for it are not refunded.
• The customer is responsible for all data related to the registered domain name, including keeping the contact details current, complete and correct for the whole registration period. Only the data provided by the customer is considered valid; the provider is not required to act on anything other than the data given by the customer, nor to check its accuracy.
