What is a .nl domain?

.nl is the country code domain of the Netherlands. It is managed by SIDN, the Dutch registry foundation, and it is one of the most widely used country code domains in Europe. A .nl address tells visitors and search engines that your website is meant for the Netherlands and for Dutch-speaking customers. SIDN also reports that .nl is one of the most secure large domain extensions, thanks to the wide use of DNSSEC.

Who can register a .nl domain?

Anyone. Individuals and companies from any country can register a .nl domain; you do not need a Dutch company or residence. If the registrant's address is outside the Netherlands, SIDN automatically uses its own address in Arnhem as the registrant's domicile address, where official documents can be delivered.

.nl domain registration requirements

• Name: 2 to 63 characters, letters a–z, digits and hyphens; a hyphen must have a letter or digit on each side.
• No accented letters: .nl does not accept names with accented or non-Latin characters.
• Contact details: the registrant's name or company name, postal address, e-mail address and phone number, kept correct and up to date.
• Period: 1 year, renewed every year.

What happens when a .nl domain is cancelled or expires?

Renew it before the expiry date from your client area; we send renewal reminders by e-mail. When a .nl registration ends, the name goes into quarantine at SIDN. During the quarantine only the last registrant can reinstate it; after that, anyone can register it. Contact us as soon as possible if you want to keep the domain.

Is a .nl domain good for trust and SEO?

For a website aimed at the Netherlands, yes. Dutch visitors recognise .nl as a local address, and a country code domain is one of the clearest signals Google uses to show a site to users in that country. If your site targets several European countries, a generic domain such as .com or the regional .eu is the better base, with language versions for each market.

• Spelling mistakes in a domain name cannot be corrected. Once a domain name has been registered or renewed, the fees paid for it are not refunded.
• The customer is responsible for all data related to the registered domain name, including keeping the contact details current, complete and correct for the whole registration period. Only the data provided by the customer is considered valid; the provider is not required to act on anything other than the data given by the customer, nor to check its accuracy.
