What is a .ro domain?

.ro is the country code domain of Romania. It is managed by ROTLD, the Romanian registry run by the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI Bucharest). A .ro address tells visitors and search engines that your website is meant for Romania and for Romanian speakers. Who can register a .ro domain?

Anyone. ROTLD's registration rules say that any individual or company can register a .ro domain name, whatever the country they are in. You do not need a Romanian address, a Romanian company or a local representative.

.ro domain registration requirements

  • Name: up to 63 characters before .ro, letters a–z, digits and hyphens; it cannot start or end with a hyphen.
  • Romanian diacritics: names with ă, â, î, ș and ț have been accepted since 2 June 2015.
  • Registrant details: whether the registrant is a person or a company, an identification number (a personal ID number, CNP in Romania, or the company's fiscal or registration number), postal address, e-mail and phone number. The details must be correct and kept up to date.
  • Period: 1 to 3 years at a time, paid in advance.

.com.ro and other second-level .ro domains

Besides .ro, the registry also runs second-level names such as .com.ro (companies and commercial services), .org.ro (non-profit organisations), .info.ro, .nom.ro and .tm.ro (registered trademarks only). Most new Romanian websites use the plain .ro name, and that is the one IPHOST registers online.

Is a .ro domain good for SEO?

Yes, for a website aimed at Romania. A country code domain is one of the clearest signals Google uses to show a site to users in that country, and visitors in Romania recognise .ro as a local address.   • .ro domains can be registered and renewed for periods of 1 to 3 years.
  • Spelling mistakes in a domain name cannot be corrected. Once a domain name has been registered or renewed, the fees paid for it are not refunded.
